George Kittle Late Grandfather With T-shirt Before 49ers-cardinals
After the 49ers’ impressive 45-29 victory over the Cardinals on Sunday in Arizona, tight end George Kittle addressed the media. In the celebratory atmosphere of the victorious locker room, Kittle proudly sported a T-shirt declaring the 49ers as the 2023 NFC West champions.
The significance of the shirt extended beyond the team’s triumph. Across George Kittle chest was an image paying homage to a bygone era, featuring a player holding a football and wearing a leather helmet with no facemask. The player in the image was none other than Kittle’s late grandfather, “Bruisin’ Bub” Krieger.
Describing his grandfather, Kittle shared, “He played football the right way: violent, physical. And he was also No. 85, which is pretty sick. What are the odds of that?”

Adding a layer of personal significance, Kittle chose to wear the shirt on Sunday for his grandmother, “Lucky” Krieger, who attended the 49ers’ victorious game. She is set to celebrate her 101st birthday on Jan. 6.
“Lucky” also attended the 49ers’ season finale last year against the Cardinals at Levi’s Stadium. On Sunday, she had the joy of watching her grandson make an impact with two catches for 54 yards.
Beyond the personal tribute, George Kittle achieved a significant career milestone during the game. With 450 career receptions and 6,119 yards, he became the fourth tight end in NFL history with at least 450 receptions and 6,000 yards in his first seven seasons. This accomplishment puts him in the esteemed company of Antonio Gates, Jimmy Graham, and Travis Kelce.
Kittle’s connection to the old-school style of play is evident, and it’s a sentiment that stems from the close relationship he shared with his grandfather, “Bruisin’ Bub.” Despite having a scholarship to play football at Iowa, “Bruisin’ Bub” chose to help run the family farm and declined an NFL offer from the Chicago Cardinals.
Married to “Lucky” in 1941, the couple raised ten daughters, including Jan Krieger, George’s mother. Jan, an accomplished athlete, had a stellar basketball career at Drake University and also excelled in softball.
“Bruisin’ Bub” passed away in 2011 at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy of football prowess and a lasting impact on his grandson, George Kittle.
